Close to Sappy but Crossing Over to Good

This video by The Piano Guys, a couple of fellows with helpers from Utah, is based on a pop song, but what they do with it is marvelous.

It still pops, is catchy, but goes a little further. Compare it with the English boy band, One Direction, below and their trite, stupid lyrics.

The arrangement, the way they use the piano is just so beyond clever. Cleverness is useless unless it's married to serving the object it's employed on. As Ovid wrote, "art shows not its art."

Well, you can see this is clever, artful, full of guile  only because you see the video stressing it. Without the video, you hear something simply good.

I can't listen to this just once.

Here's the original which suffers in contrast.

My kids tend to be the ones to make me watch the Piano Guys, but I always enjoy them.
