Pearls of expression.

We also know the limits to our speech. And we’re of course told things like “free speech doesn’t cover hate speech” which is what is technically known as bullshit, since no one ever needed a right to free speech to say that butterflies are pretty and ice cream tastes delicious. Or for that matter to echo the things the controllers of media and social media want you to say.

  1. There's a great quote by Brandeis, can't find it, to the effect that freedom of speech is meant to protect speech we disagree with.

  2. I can't call it to mind myself, what's left of it anyway. I've seen similar quotes over the years. Hoyt's is one of the best.
