At this time, as self-nominated leaders and pseudo-saviors trade in barbs and slanders in their struggle over “the most important job in the world;” as autocrats and demagogues plot their paths to supreme power and the destruction of those who give the lie to their pretensions; as a narcissistic obsessive strains to rationalize the breaking of America’s most serious laws and her protectors strain to rationalize not prosecuting her despite her blatant criminality...where, then, is Truth?
Mark Butterworth founded a novel on that question. It’s a very good book. I recommend it, though those viscerally hostile to Christianity would find it unpalatable.
I have another book in mind as well:
The world has always missed Divinity, either because it has sought It in the wrong places or because it has ignored the wrong things. It has sought Divinity in power, in popularity, in progress, in science; it has ignored the possibility of ever finding It in simplicity, in the unexpected, in defeat, and in frailty. And yet the sign of Divinity will always be the sign of seeming weakness: “This shall be to you a sign: a Babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger.” The world has always sought Divinity in the power of a Babel, but never in the weakness of a Bethlehem...in the inns of popular opinion, but never in the stable of the ignored...in the cradles of gold, but never in the cribs of straw—always in power, but never in weakness.
Keep that in mind, lest the preening of the powerful and the trumpets of their heralds deafen you to the still small voice from within as you search for Truth.
May God bless and keep you all.
