Government is born from our wickedness.” Paraphrased from Thomas Paine, Common Sense

The confusion of “government” with “society” is at the root of much of our political perverse incentives.

If something is a good idea with little downside (like how many government programs are sold), then you don’t need the power of taxation & a gun to get it going. People do it voluntarily to better their lives. This is 'society' in a nutshell.

The problem with having only 'society' is that people are a-holes. They cheat, they steal, they murder. And if you don’t slap down the a-holes, 'society' is destroyed. Clasically, that’s the role of 'government'.

'Society' exists to satisfy my wants while 'government' exists to secure my rights. Nothing more, nothing less.

Today, both sides of the isle see 'government' as a way to force a 'society' upon the population regardless of their consent because the elites think they know better than everyone else.

Any society that is enforced by the point of a bayonet is not a good one.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6557458849091969678.post-22577733607100334862014-07-16T07:29:17.498-04:002014-07-16T07:29:17.498-04:00@Backwoods Engineer said...

It is their nature. Anyone who disagrees with them must either be convinced of the error of their ways or face increasingly severe punishment. Like rust, the Left never sleeps. Their ideology is their religion and all must be converted or defeated. I think many of us see the next civil war looming ahead. Unlike the last time, the world has grown increasingly smaller and I doubt Russia or China will just sit on the sidelines and watch.Gromanhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12736363554830728055noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6557458849091969678.post-54476113134209146952014-07-15T17:12:34.752-04:002014-07-15T17:12:34.752-04:00Fascinating essay, and brings to mind some things ...Fascinating essay, and brings to mind some things I've read.

"The personal is the political" is the characteristic of a society in the time of its Fourth Turning (the book of the same name is very interesting). Just as it was during the time of the American Revolution, and just before the Civil War, and the twin Crises of the Depression and WWII, so it is now. A Crisis looms, and people on both sides believe that it can be stopped if enough people change their personal behavior. It's merely a self-deception: the Crisis cannot be stopped, it must be dealt with. There is some control of the measure of bloodshed that must accompany the Crisis.

Love your stuff, Fran.Backwoods Engineerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13666984602233967254noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6557458849091969678.post-59198694960161071402014-07-15T14:37:41.642-04:002014-07-15T14:37:41.642-04:00Insightful as ever, Mr. PInsightful as ever, Mr. PDifferhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15581662615586346808noreply@blogger.com
