Unfortunately, times have moved on. Three generations of people progressively "educated to the point of stupidity and ignorance" have been born and raised since then.
I believe that before something like this could happen again, a self selected group of people would need to congregate in an area where they'd constitute a majority rather than a minority.
The bonds of societal trusts have been badly strained, if not outright broken, over the last few decades. This makes "divide and rule" so much more effective for the political "masters".
Ah, but to despair is a sin.
